“We hope to start this business in order to make enough money to support our family and to live with dignity”

-the Jaghoory family

‘Esteghal’ is the Persian word for ‘independence’. This pilot scheme is a collaboration of efforts to generate finances for refugees and migrants to make their business ideas become a reality. By moving away from the charity model of aid, we hope to develop more sustainable forms of ‘helping’.

‘Project Esteghlal’ aims to raise money to support refugees and asylum seekers in Athens, who are looking to start their own businesses based on their preexisting skills.

We are a group of independent volunteers who have over two years experience supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Athens. We have been volunteering in different areas such as accommodation, legal support, interpretation and education. Time and time again, we have witnessed how little support there is to assist refugees and asylum seekers to become independent and because of this obvious lack in the existing services, we decided to establish Project Esteghal.

The first family we will work with is an Afghan family of five who have been living in Greece for two years. Both parents are chefs with years of experience cooking for large events back in Afghanistan “…we have skills already in cooking and have many special recipes”.

Currently the family live in a squat and volunteer in its kitchen. This project would allow them to move out of the squat and support themselves financially.

The total cost for start-up and initial running costs for the first 6 months will be 16,100€.

The projected start-up cost is 10,700€ (equipment 4,700€, renovation 1,300€, fire safety assessment 1,200€ and accountancy 3,500€). We will also support the family to run their business for 6 months, totaling 5,400€ (roughly 900€ per month for rent, ingredients and ultility bills).

EU asylum policy has created an environment of hopelessness. 60,000 people are stranded in the limbos of hotspot reception centres spread across the country, and this number only includes those registered in the Greek asylum services.

Greek institutions are already struggling to meet the basic needs of refugees; empowering them is far down the list of priorities. Unfortunately, the majority of the support structures in place to deal with the ‘refugee crisis’ create and perpetuate dynamics of dependency between those GIVING and those RECEIVING aid.

We need to empower those whose independence has been taken from them.

You can make a donation to support the Jaghoorys to create their family restaurant. and become self-sufficient.

100% of all money donated will go directly to the Jaghoorys.
